Ran into a guy at a hostel in Medellin who totally flipped my view on travel insurance

Ngl, I always thought travel insurance was a waste of money until I shared a bunk with this guy from Australia. He told me his policy paid for a $1,200 hospital visit after he got food poisoning in Cartagena. Honestly, seeing his receipt made me realize I was gambling with my safety for like $50 a month. Anyone else skip insurance and regret it later?

Yeah I figured that out the hard way too. Had to pay for a dislocated shoulder out of pocket in Thailand and that little "waste of money" would have saved me about four grand. Funny how a few hundred bucks for insurance suddenly looks like a bargain once you've been stuck with the actual bill.
