Saved $200 booking a flight through a different city hub last month

I was flying from Seattle to Chicago in April and saw direct flights were $380. I decided to check flying from Seattle to Minneapolis first and then Minneapolis to Chicago. That split ticket cost me $180 total and I just had a 3 hour layover in MSP. Has anyone else tried hub skipping like this to save cash on domestic flights?

Honestly, a 3 hour layover in MSP sounds more like a chore than a deal to me. I mean, you traded a direct 4 hour flight for what, like 8 hours total with layover time? Saving $200 is cool and all but that's a whole afternoon you're not getting back.

a whole afternoon you're not getting back" - sure, but $200 savings is like 3 hours of my time at my hourly rate. So even if i just sat in MSP and scrolled tiktok, i'm technically ahead. Plus layovers aren't dead time, you can grab food, walk around, people watch. A direct flight that's 4 hours feels way longer than a 3 hour layover with a short flight on each side too. And honestly, $200 is real money for most people, not just "cool and all.
