Showerthought: is it better to book flights 3 months out or 3 weeks out?

I spent years booking everything 4 months ahead because I thought earlier was cheaper, then a coworker told me she saved $180 on a Denver trip by waiting until 18 days before. Which camp are you in for domestic flights, early planners or last-minute gamblers?

Hold on, 18 days out for Denver? That's wild. I've always been a 4-month planner too because I'm paranoid prices will spike. But seriously, $180 off? That's like a whole round of airport beers if you're brave enough to pay those prices. I guess I need to rethink my whole booking life now because I've been stressing for no reason. Still feels risky though, I'd probably end up paying double because my luck is awful.

@phoenixh74 I've booked 3 days out before and saved more. It works if your schedule is flexible.
