Spent $40 on a local SIM card in Bangkok and it saved me from a huge taxi scam.

The driver tried to charge me 800 baht for a 15-minute ride, but having data let me pull up the Grab app to show him the real price of 150 baht. What's the best way you've found to get cheap data abroad?

Getting an eSIM before I land has been a total game changer. It means I have data the second I step off the plane to check maps and ride apps. Saves me from getting ripped off before I even find an ATM.

That bit about getting ripped off before you even find an ATM. It's everywhere now. Like how you need the app just to order a coffee or you pay more. Or parking meters that only work with a phone. They get you when you're stuck, when you have no other choice. It's a tax on being unprepared.

Same exact thing happened to me in Vietnam! I got a local SIM for like 6 bucks at the airport and it saved me when a taxi tried to charge me 500k dong for a ride that should have been 80k. I just calmly showed him Google Maps distance and the Grab price right there on my phone. He let me go without another word. Having that data right when you land is worth way more than the cost of the SIM itself.
