The cheap duffel bag I bought for a weekend trip tore open at the zipper on day one

My bag exploded in a train station in Madrid last month, so I grabbed a sewing kit from a dollar store and stitched it shut with fishing line. Has anyone else tried the fishing line trick on busted zippers, or is there a better fix?

Patch it from the inside with a piece of denim and some heavy duty thread, it'll hold way longer than fishing line. Fishing line works in a pinch but it can cut through the fabric over time if the bag is packed tight. Hit the edges with a lighter to melt the thread ends and keep them from unraveling.

Huh, have you tried using an old pair of jeans for the patch? I did that with my backpack last year and it's still holding strong after a few thousand miles on the road. The denim blends right in and the heavy duty thread barely shows if you match the color close enough.
