The hostel booking loophole everyone ignores

I noticed folks keep booking dorms through the big sites and never check the hostel's own website. Last month in Lisbon, a 6-bed dorm was 38 euros on Hostelworld but 24 euros direct with the same cancellation rules. I've seen this happen in 4 different cities over the past year. Has anyone else found a place that actually beats the aggregator price, or are we all just stuck with the convenience fee?

Check if that price gap holds up when you factor in the free breakfast or luggage storage most hostels throw in, or are those extras just baked into the aggregator markup anyway? What'd the front desk say when you asked them to match the direct rate?
