Tried Airbnb vs hostel dorms in Barcelona last month and the hostel won by a mile
I was going back and forth on where to stay in Barcelona for a 5 day trip. Airbnb looked nice but after fees it was like 85 bucks a night for a private room. Hostel dorm was 25. I figured I'd hate sharing a room but honestly the hostel had better wifi, a real common area where people actually talked, and the front desk guy gave me a map with his own food spots marked. Airbnb host never even messaged me back. Has anyone else had way better luck with hostels than they expected?

Man that Airbnb host not even replying is rough. Same thing happened to me in Lisbon, host cancelled last minute, no message. Hostel ended up being way more fun. Had a guy at the front desk in Rome who circled all the best bakeries on a napkin. Never got that from any apartment rental.
