Tried sleeping in a hostel common room to save $20 a night in Lisbon

Thought I was being smart. Booked a dorm bed for $12 but figured I could skip the bed and crash on their couch area instead. Security grabbed me at 3am thinking I was a random homeless person off the street. Had to show my booking confirmation and explain myself to a confused Portuguese night guard. Anyone else ever push the cheap limits too far and get caught?

@lilyo30 pretty much nailed it with the security guard part. You basically set yourself up to look like a squatter in a place that's supposed to be for paying guests. The whole plan was risky from the start since common rooms are designed for socializing, not sleeping. You saved a few bucks but lost sleep and dignity in the process. Next time just take the dorm bed or find a cheaper hostel instead of pulling stunts like this.

Honestly that night guard was just doing his job. I dont really get why this is framed like some big drama. You picked the absolute most obvious spot to get noticed and then acted surprised when security did security stuff. Like what did you think was gonna happen, someone sleeping in a common area at 3am? Thats the most suspicious thing ever. Tbh the guard probably sees way sketchier stuff every night, you were just another awkward tourist to him. Ngl you saved $20 but wasted an hour of everyones time including your own.
