Used to book hotels on Expedia until I got hit with a $80 resort fee in Vegas

Last year I booked a room for $60 a night on Expedia but showed up and they slapped on an $80 resort fee. Now I always call the hotel direct before booking to ask about hidden fees like that. Has anyone else had a surprise fee ruin their budget?

Reed's got a point but it's not quite that simple. Sure, the fee is usually buried in the fine print somewhere, but that's the problem right there. Hotels know people scroll fast and just see the big $60 price tag, they intentionally hide those fees way down at the bottom of the page in tiny print. I saw a room on Hotels.com last month that listed $55 a night, but after you clicked through two more screens it finally showed a $35 "destination fee" and a $12 "amenity charge" - like what's the difference between those two anyway? The whole system is designed to trick you into thinking you're paying less than you actually are. If they were upfront about the total from the start, nobody would have to call ahead and do detective work.

Get over it, the resort fee was literally posted on the booking page you just didn't scroll down far enough.
