I finally hit my $500 emergency fund goal after a chat with my barista
I was grabbing coffee last month, feeling stressed about money as usual. My regular barista, Sarah, noticed and asked if I was okay. I told her I was just worried about an unexpected bill. She said, 'I get it. I started putting just $20 from each paycheck into a jar, and it saved me when my cat got sick.' That simple story stuck with me. I went home and set up an automatic transfer of $25 every two weeks to a separate savings account. It felt small, but I just checked and the balance hit $500! It's not a huge amount, but it's mine and it's there. Has anyone else had a small piece of advice from an unexpected person that finally got you to start saving?

My mechanic told me to save for car repairs... still waiting for that to kick in.

Automatic transfers are a nice idea, but they don't work for everyone. My budget is too tight for even a small fixed amount, and an unexpected expense just wipes it out anyway. Hearing a feel-good story doesn't change the math when there's nothing left to save.
