My fridge died on a Tuesday and I didn't panic

The compressor went out on my 12 year old Whirlpool at 2 in the afternoon, but since I had $400 set aside in my emergency fund from skipping takeout for 4 months, I had a new one delivered by Friday - has anyone else found that having a dedicated 'appliance repair' savings bucket makes breakdowns way less stressful?

Man, my buddy Dave went through almost the same thing last year! His freezer started making this weird knocking sound on a Sunday night and he didn't have a dime saved for it. He ended up having to borrow his brother's truck to haul everything to a neighbor's deep freeze, then spent two weeks eating cereal and sandwiches while he scraped together the cash. Said the worst part was throwing out a whole venison shoulder his dad had given him for Christmas, that hurt. He's got three different savings buckets now from that one disaster, appliance fund included. So yeah, I've seen how much easier it is when you've got that money waiting.

@skylerc86, I think you meant to say he hauled everything to a neighbor's freezer, not deep freeze. A deep freeze is a specific type of chest freezer, you know. Your buddy Dave's story is a good cautionary tale though. Losing good meat like that venison shoulder is a tough lesson to learn. It's those little savings buckets that really make the difference when something breaks.
