The envelope system actually saved my grocery budget in 2 months

I was blowing $600 a month on groceries for just me and my cat. Tried cutting coupons and meal planning but nothing stuck. Finally pulled out $300 cash every payday and stuck it in an envelope labeled 'food.' When the envelope was empty, I ate rice and beans for 3 days. Now I'm down to $400 a month and my pantry isn't overflowing with stuff I never eat. Anyone else try the cash-only trick and have it backfire on something unexpected?

My husband and I tried this with our entertainment budget a few years back and learned a hard lesson about forgetting the envelope at home on date night. It really shows how much we rely on plastic to avoid thinking about what we're spending until the bill comes. That friction of actually counting out bills makes you realize every dollar has a home, and you have to decide if that new purchase is worth taking from somewhere else.

12 envelopes in one year, @zara_hunt, that's a solid run. I tried cash only for groceries once, left the envelope in the truck, and my wife was not thrilled. The physical act of handing over cash is a gut check every time. It's almost too easy to swipe a card and just hope it all works out at the end of the month. Plastic really does let you ignore the math until it's too late.
