The week I tracked every penny and my budget got worse, not better

So I tried the whole 'write down every single purchase' thing for 7 days. Coffee, gas, snacks, all of it. At first it felt great, like I was finally being honest with myself. But by day 4 I was panicking over a $4 iced tea and skipping lunch just to keep my spreadsheet looking clean. By day 6 I actually spent MORE because I felt deprived and bought a $9 pastry out of spite. The real wake up call was when I compared my tracked week to a normal week and they were basically the same amount. Turns out the problem was never awareness, it was that I was budgetting like a robot and not like a human. My wife asked 'are you budgeting or just punishing yourself?' and that hit hard. Has anyone else found that strict tracking backfires and loose guidelines actually work better?

Yep, tracking turns into a weird game. Loose rules saved my sanity.
