Three years of envelope budgeting finally paid off in a big way last week

I started the cash envelope system back in March 2021 after a rough winter where I racked up 400 dollars on credit cards just for groceries and gas. Last Tuesday, I had to replace the transmission on my 2009 Ford Focus and the shop quoted me 1,850 dollars. I walked in, pulled out the car repair envelope, and handed over the exact cash without touching my savings account. It felt strange at first to go back to cash after using cards for so long, but seeing that envelope full made the whole system real for me. Has anyone else had that moment where a budget method finally proves itself in a crisis?

Man, that's the whole point right there. The system works when you don't have to stress about the emergency, just pull the cash and move on.
