TIL my old way of tracking cash was costing me money

I was at the grocery store in Boise last year and my card got declined because I'd forgotten about a $80 automatic payment, so I switched to a zero-based budget app that week. Has anyone else found a better system after a surprise like that?

My old system was a sticky note on the fridge. It lied to me constantly. The app was a rude but necessary awakening. My wallet is happier now, even if my pride isn't.

Eighty bucks on coffee?! That's insane. I had a similar shock when I switched to an app and found out I was spending over a hundred dollars a month just on energy drinks from the gas station. I thought it was like thirty bucks, tops. The app really does call you out on your own lies, doesn't it?
