Why does nobody talk about how long it takes to fix a messed up budget spreadsheet?

I tried to merge my partner's spending data into my monthly tracker last week. My formulas broke and I spent 4 hours trying to figure out why. Turns out I had a column formatted as text instead of numbers, so nothing added up right. Has anyone else lost a whole evening to a tiny formatting error like that?

Ngl, I kinda see it the other way. That "papercut problems" thing sounds nice, but 4 hours on a text formatting issue is more about rushing through it instead of checking your data types first. I've done the same thing, and yeah it sucks. But if you slow down for two minutes to format cells right before merging, you don't waste the whole evening. The "rage-quitting" comes from skipping the boring setup step, not from the error itself.

How many times have I rage-quit over a single wrong cell format?

That "whole evening to a tiny formatting error" is exactly right. I read a tech blog once that called these "papercut problems." They're small but they bleed out all your time. You feel so stupid staring at a sheet full of numbers you know are wrong. The worst part is when you finally find it, the fix takes two seconds. Makes you want to throw the computer.
