Spent 5 years gluing up panels wrong before a guy at a shop in Portland set me straight

I used to just glob glue all over the edges of my boards and clamp them tight. Thought that was how everyone did it. Then I visited this custom shop in Portland where a guy named Dave watched me for like 2 minutes and asked why I was wasting so much glue. He showed me to only put a thin bead down the center of the edge, no more than a 1/8 inch bead. Then said to rub the boards together till the glue squeezes out even. I felt like an idiot. My joints are way cleaner now and I use maybe a third of the glue I used to buy. Has anyone else found a trick like that that made you question everything you thought you knew?

I had a small kitchen job and the customer gave me two options. Oak was cheaper by about $400 but walnut just looked right for their dark cabinets. I went with walnut even though it hurt the budget a little. The grain came out way better than I expected and the customer was thrilled. Has anyone else taken a risk on a more expensive wood and had it work out?

Had a job last week where the client brought their own soft close drawer slides. They looked fine in the box but when I went to install them, the mounting holes didn't line up with any standard drawer box I make. Hit 200 dovetail joints in a single kitchen job and had to stop and count

I was working on a big custom kitchen remodel in Denver last month and kept cutting dovetails for the drawers. Before I knew it I had done 200 joints by hand and that really surprised me. I usually only get maybe 30 or 40 on a normal job but this one had 12 big drawers plus some small ones. Had to stop and check my math because I couldn't believe I did that many without a single blowout. I think switching to a sharper chisel and taking my time on the layout really helped. Has anyone else ever hit a number like that and had to double check yourself?
