A kid at the hardware store asked me what a dado stack was for
I was picking up some 80 grit belts yesterday and heard a young guy ask the clerk that. The clerk just shrugged. I ended up explaining it to him for a minute in the aisle. It hit me that twenty years ago, most guys in that store would have known. Makes you wonder how many basic shop skills are just fading away. What's something simple you've had to explain recently that used to be common knowledge?

Whoa, wait - the clerk actually just shrugged? That's kind of mind-blowing, that's like the most basic woodworking tool there is (besides maybe a hammer).

Shocked the clerk just shrugged at that question. Like @karenw23 said, it's basic tools, and that lack of knowledge is becoming normal. Makes me worry what else we're losing.
