Edge banding peeled up on a job last Tuesday

I was installing a set of built-in bookshelves for a client near Lakewood and the iron-on edge banding came loose on three of the shelves within a day. Used a $60 Amazon special iron and some generic glue, guess that was the problem. Did I mess up the prep work or is the iron just junk? What do you guys use that actually stays put?

Did you use CLAMPS while the glue was cooling down?
