Hot take: a wrong measurement saved me $200 last week

I was at my bench in the garage trying to finalize a router template for a set of shaker doors. Caught myself reading the bit diameter wrong and was about to cut the mortise a quarter inch too shallow. Stopped, rechecked my layout with the actual bit in hand, and realized I would have ruined 3 panels of knotty alder I got from a mill in Eugene.

A knotty alder panel isn't exactly cheap either, so that's a SOLID save. But wait, you were reading the bit diameter wrong on a mortise depth? That sounds like you might have been confusing bit diameter with the cutting edge length instead.

Hate when that happens, totally been there myself. I once spent a whole afternoon trying to figure out why my mortises were coming out all loose, turns out I just grabbed the wrong bit and never double checked the package. Makes you feel like a real bonehead but hey, we all learn something new.
