Pro tip: a finisher in Toledo told me my doors were too tight, and he was right
Two years back I was building shaker doors with a 1/16 inch gap all around and figured that was fine. An older finisher looked at a set and said the paint would bridge the gap and make the doors look glued shut. I started leaving 3/32 inch on the hinge side and 1/8 inch on the latch side instead. Doors move better all year now, no rub marks after humid summers. Curious if anyone else runs different gaps for painted vs clear finished doors?
A 1/16 inch gap sounds fine until you watch a guy with a spray gun turn your door into a wall decoration. I had the same deal on a set of maple cabinets, 1/16 all around, and by the time the second coat of paint cured you could barely slide a business card in there. The paint builds up on both edges and suddenly your 1/16 is basically zero. 3/32 and 1/8 sounds about right, and I do go wider on paint than on clear for the same reason. Clear finish barely adds anything, but paint keeps building until it stops.
