PSA: A client in Denver asked for a 'floating' cabinet that actually floated
Three years ago, they meant they wanted it wall mounted without a toe kick, but the initial email had me picturing a levitating box. Anyone else get a request that was worded in a way that threw you off completely?

Actually, that wording seems pretty clear to me. In cabinet work, a floating design specifically means wall mounted with no visible support to the floor. The mental image is fun, but the request itself was technically correct.

You're right about the technical definition, but the original post was asking about floating kitchen islands. Those almost always need some kind of floor contact for stability, even with hidden supports. A true wall mounted floating cabinet is a different beast from a big island in the middle of the room. The term gets used loosely for anything with a gap underneath, which is where the confusion comes in.

Yeah I've been down this road before with a customer who wanted a "floating" kitchen island. We ended up doing hidden steel legs and a plywood kickplate painted to match the floor, it looked like it was hovering but was solid as a rock. Took some extra engineering but totally doable if you're willing to get creative with the supports.
