Shoutout to the old-timer who showed me the pencil trick for marking dovetails
He said to always use a 4H pencil, not a regular one, because the harder lead gives a cleaner line that doesn't smudge when you're transferring marks. Anyone have a different method they swear by?

That 4H pencil tip is a good one. I've always used a marking knife for the main lines. It scores the wood so the chisel has a place to sit. Do you still use a pencil for the waste area, or do you mark the whole joint with the knife first?
