That old carpenter's pencil trick finally clicked for me

Last month a retired guy in Portland watched me mark a case side and just said 'you're fighting the grain, flip the pencil flat.' I tried it on my next ten drawer fronts and the lines are dead on now, no more guessing. Anyone else get a tip from a stranger that made way more sense than any video?

Man, that's funny timing. I spent six years holding a pencil like a stick and wondering why my lines looked like a drunken spider crawled across the wood. The flat trick fixed my whole world, but now I just look like I'm shading a coloring book whenever I mark a cut. Still way better than squinting at a crooked line.
