Tried a trick with a piece of painter's tape to mark my hinge mortise depth and it worked perfectly on a maple face frame.

I was struggling to get consistent depth on my 35mm hinge mortises until I stuck a strip of tape on the forstner bit shank as a depth stop, which gave me a perfect clean edge every time without any tear-out. What's your go-to method for keeping those mortises clean?

Love that tape trick, it's so simple! I actually agree with @ryanprice about scoring first, but a sharp bit and light passes matter more than any fancy gear.

Ever see someone try to fix a problem by making a much bigger one? My buddy was so fed up with tear-out on his cabinet doors that he bought a fancy template guide bushing kit. He spent a whole Saturday setting it up, only to realize his router base was the wrong size for the new bushings. He went back to just scoring the outline with a knife first and going slow, which is what he should have done in the first place. The tape trick is smarter than half the tools in my shop.

Honestly, is scoring really that different from just taping the line first?
