Debate: Did buying those blackout curtains actually pay off for anyone?
I dropped $200 on thermal blackout curtains back in December because I kept hearing they'd save money on heating. But after living with them for 3 months up here in Buffalo, my power bill dropped maybe $12 total. That's going to take years to break even. Plus they block all the natural light during the day, so I'm running lamps more. On the other hand, my bedroom stays cooler in summer and warmer at night, so maybe there's a comfort angle people are missing. Did I get scammed by hype, or am I just not accounting for long-term savings? Has anyone else run the numbers and found it worth it?

Well my buddy in Rochester got blackout curtains and ended up sleeping through three alarms every morning for a month!

Your $12 drop tracks with what I've seen - the REAL payoff with blackout curtains is the comfort and noise reduction, not the power bill math. For Buffalo winters, you'd actually get better ROI from caulking your windows and adding a door sweep for like $40 total.
