My brother in law swears the moon landing was faked, so I showed him the reflector data at his own kitchen table in Toledo and now he won't talk to me
So last Thanksgiving at his place in Toledo, we got into it again. He pulls out the same tired points about the flag waving and no stars in the photos. I didn't yell or anything. I just opened my laptop and pulled up the lunar laser ranging data from the McDonald Observatory in Texas. Every major observatory on earth bounces lasers off the retroreflectors the Apollo crews left up there. That only works if someone physically placed them. He goes quiet for a second, then says the data is faked too. I asked him who faked it across every country including the Soviets, who would have loved to expose us. He didn't have an answer, just got up and got more pie. Now my sister says I ruined the holiday. I don't think I did. I think if a theory can't survive one simple question, that's on the theory. Has anyone else had a family member shut down the second you bring up something checkable? Like not even arguing, just facts they could look up themselves.
The part that gets me is the retroreflectors need a human hand to aim them right, that's the detail nobody brings up. You can't just drop a mirror up there and hope it lands facing the right way.
