Overheard an HVAC tech say duct sealing is more important than the unit itself...

I was getting a quote for a new furnace last Tuesday and the guy mentioned my ductwork leaks were probably costing me 30% efficiency. He showed me the infrared readings on his phone and it made my old system look like a joke. Anyone else ever bother with duct sealing before swapping out their whole HVAC setup?

My buddy spent a whole weekend sealing his ducts with that mastic stuff - the goopy tar-like compound, not the tape. Said his house felt less drafty and his bills dropped enough that his wife stopped giving him the side-eye about it. Took him two days because he had to crawl under the house and reach every stupid joint. Now he swears he'd never replace a unit without sealing first.

Double down on something most people miss: that mastic also kills the condensation problem in humid climates. I had a buddy in Florida who sealed his ducts and suddenly his attic wasn't sweating like a cold beer in July. Less moisture up there means less mold, less rot, and his AC didn't run as hard fighting humidity either. Plus the air quality got better, his wife stopped sneezing every time the air kicked on. Two days of crawling around (in a Florida attic, no less) and he saved way more than just the electric bill if you ask me.
