That whole "lights in the sky over Phoenix" thing from 1997 keeps getting misreported

People keep saying it was just flares from the military, but I talked to a retired air traffic controller from Sky Harbor who said their radar showed 6 objects in a V formation doing maneuvers no plane can do, so why does nobody bring up the radar data in these debates?

Oh man, that radar data is the part that always gets glossed over. I remember reading a book about this back in like 2002 (maybe it was called "The Phoenix Lights" or something) and it had a whole chapter on how the FAA guys were basically told to shut up about it. My uncle was a pilot for Southwest and he said the same thing - he knew a guy who worked the tower that night and the guy swore those blips were doing 90-degree turns at speeds that would have killed any pilot. But then the military comes out the next day with their "oh it was just flares" story and everyone just kind of moved on. Weird how that works.

Makes you wonder what else gets quietly swept under the rug like that.
