Compared my mutant carrots side by side with store bought ones and wow what a difference
I grew a row of carrots this year that looked like they got in a fight with the soil. All twisted and forked, some looked like little orange aliens. My neighbor gave me grief about it, said I should just buy the perfect ones at the grocery store for $2 a bag. So last week I actually did a taste test. I boiled some of my ugly ones and some of the pretty store ones, no salt or butter, just plain. My carrots were so much sweeter and had this earthy flavor that the store ones just didn't have at all. The store carrots were watery and kind of bland in comparison. Now I'm thinking maybe the soil here is just rocky and that's why they get all deformed but the flavor is actually better because of it. Has anyone else noticed that ugly homegrown veggies taste way better than the perfect looking ones from the store?
