My crooked carrots finally hit 50 pounds and I almost threw them out

I was about to toss the whole bed of carrots last week because they all looked like twisted little aliens. Seriously, every single one had two legs or was growing sideways like it had given up on life. But then I weighed them on my bathroom scale out of curiosity and it came to 50.2 pounds. That number stopped me cold because I spent like 8 bucks on the seed packet and got this massive ugly haul instead of the perfect straight ones from the store that cost 3 dollars a bunch. Now I'm pickling half and giving the rest to neighbors with a note that says "they taste normal I swear." The bent ones actually have more sweetness I think because they struggle more getting through the soil. Has anyone else noticed that the ugliest vegetables always taste a little better than the pretty ones?

I gotta push back on that "ugly ones taste better" thing... I think we just tell ourselves that to feel better about growing mutant vegetables. I had a batch of freakish tomatoes last year that looked like they were melting and they tasted exactly like the pretty ones from the store, just with more seeds and tougher skin. The sweetness thing with carrots might be real if the soil compaction forced them to put more energy into sugar, but that's not about them being ugly, that's about them being stressed. To me, crooked just means you got imperfect vegetables that still do the job just fine, nothing magical about it.

The weird shapes usually mean you didn't baby them enough with loose soil or whatever, so they had to muscle their way through. That struggle translates to flavor the same way a yard chicken tastes better than a factory one.
