My deformed tomato went from circus freak to sweetest thing in my yard
I planted this heirloom variety back in March and by June it looked like a horror movie reject, all lumpy with this weird spiral scar running down the side. I almost ripped it out twice because the shape was SO bad, but my neighbor said to wait it out. By mid-August that same ugly fruit turned deep red and when I sliced it open, the flesh was almost candied, like way sweeter than the picture-perfect ones I got from the farmers market in Austin. The difference was just time and not giving up on it, plus I watered it less once it started ripening. Now I'm actually rooting for the deformed ones first because they seem to pack more flavor. Anyone else notice the freakish looking veggies taste better than the pretty ones, or am I just getting lucky this season?

Funny how the ugly ones usually turn out to be the hidden gems, same goes for people and pretty much everything else.
