My neighbor swore coffee grounds would keep slugs off my cabbage, and now I have the ugliest (and tastiest) cabbage on the block
My next door neighbor Ruth told me back in April to sprinkle used coffee grounds around my cabbage starts to keep slugs away, and I figured it was an old wives' tale but tried it anyway. Turns out she was right about the slugs but wrong about the look, because now my 4 cabbage heads are covered in this crusty brown gunk and they look like they got dragged through a mud puddle. They're small, lopsided, and one has a weird split down the side, but I chopped one up last night for slaw and it was sweeter than anything I've bought at the store in years. Has anyone else had coffee grounds actually work, or did I just get lucky with a weird growing season here in Tacoma?
Ha, I tried the coffee ground trick too and my plants ended up looking like they lost a fight with a puddle. Mine didn't even taste that good, so you got the last laugh there. The crusty brown mess is just part of the deal, I guess, and a split head is no big loss when the slaw turns out sweet. Ruth sounds like she knows her stuff, even if her beauty tips are lacking.
