My neighbor's perfect tomatoes made me hate my ugly ones until I tasted hers
She bragged about her prize winners from her raised beds in Des Moines, then handed me a misshapen cull that tasted like candy, and I realized I'd been tossing my own lumps for 5 years because they looked bad. Now I only judge by bite, not looks, and my 'reject' pile feeds more people than my pretty produce ever did. Anyone else out there secretly eating the weird ones while giving away the pretty stuff?

My neighbor Carol in Ohio had the same thing happen with her tomatoes last summer. She was so proud of her perfect big ones and gave me a weird little cracked one that I almost threw in the compost out of politeness. Man, that thing was so sweet and rich I nearly cried. Now I grow all my tomatoes the same way and just sort them by taste when I pick them. The ugly ones go in my salsa and the perfect ones go to the office potluck where nobody cares about flavor anyway. It feels good to finally be on the same page with her about what actually matters.
