Warning: My tomato plants got hit by early blight last week because I ignored one thing in July
Last Tuesday I walked out to my garden in Cedar Rapids and saw brown spots on the lower leaves of my Roma tomatoes. I figured it was just sun scald or maybe a little leaf spot from all the rain we got in July. Three days later half the plant looked like it had been torched. I lost about 4 pounds of green fruit that never ripened and had to pull two whole plants. The thing is, I knew better. Back in July I noticed a few spotted leaves and just pinched them off with my fingers instead of sterilizing my pruners between cuts. That one lazy move spread the fungus to every plant I touched after that. I also made the mistake of watering from overhead in the evening during that hot stretch, which is basically a welcome party for blight spores. If your tomato leaves are starting to yellow from the bottom up right now, do not wait until the weekend to deal with it. Has anyone had luck stopping early blight once it hits the stems, or is it just a goner at that point?
