A local in Medellin insisted I get a local SIM card instead of relying on my international plan.

I ignored him for a week and my phone bill was $180 higher than usual. What's the best piece of location-specific advice you've gotten on the road?

Used to think local SIM cards were a hassle. That $180 bill in Costa Rica changed my mind real quick. Best tip you ever got from someone who lives there?

Holy crap, $180? @caleb_walker6 wasn't kidding about that kind of shock. Best tip I ever got was to just eat where the taxi drivers are lined up for lunch.

Can we talk about how much we overthink the simple stuff? My first time in Mexico, a guy at my hostel told me to quit looking for the "authentic" taco spots and just go to the one with the longest line of grandmas holding tupperware. I spent two days trying to find the perfect taco truck and ended up at a place with plastic chairs and a single lightbulb. The tacos were the best I've ever had and nobody spoke English. Now I just look for where the older ladies are eating and I never check Yelp first. You end up finding way better food that way.
