Heads up: 14 countries now tax you after 183 days, and one got me in Lisbon last month
I was sitting at a cafe in Lisbon last month when a friend who works remote from there told me Portugal's tax office had just sent him a letter. He had been there 187 days and owed back taxes on his US income. I looked it up on the OECD site and found that around 14 countries now use that 183 day mark to claim you as a tax resident, and a few are cracking down hard. Has anyone else gotten hit with a surprise tax bill while hopping countries, and how did you fix it?
