I just got hit with a huge tax bill because I messed up my residency status
Last month, I got a letter from the tax office in Portugal saying I owed over 2,000 euros. I had been living there for eight months, working online, and I didn't realize I'd crossed the threshold to become a tax resident. I thought my home country taxes covered everything, but I was wrong. It took me three full days of calls and emails to sort through the paperwork and figure out a payment plan. I'm sharing this so others check the rules before they stay somewhere too long. Has anyone else had a surprise like this in a country they were nomading in?

Portugal got me too, but for around 1,500 euros. I spent six months there a couple years back and got the same scary letter. You think you're just visiting, but the clock is ticking the second you land. It's a brutal lesson to learn the hard way, isn't it? I had to dig up old bank statements and flight records to prove my dates. Now I mark a calendar reminder at 90 days in any new place just to check the local rules.

Honestly that "clock is ticking the second you land" line from @jason_robinson hits hard. Did you guys ever think about just staying under 90 days everywhere to avoid the whole mess?
