My friend in Lisbon told me to always pack a universal plug with a fuse
I thought it was overkill for my month in Chiang Mai, but my cheap adapter fried a power strip in my Airbnb on day three. The whole room went dark, and I had to explain to the host in broken Thai that I'd killed their electricity. Now I carry that fused plug like a good luck charm. Anyone else have a piece of gear they thought was silly until it saved them?

My universal adapter nearly started a fire in a hostel in Buenos Aires. Now I have two of those fused plugs, one for my chargers and one just in case. Cheap ones are honestly not worth the risk.

Always pack a fused adapter, full stop. I learned the hard way too, blowing a fuse in an old Berlin apartment. The cheap ones can't handle the power draw from a hair dryer or even a laptop charger sometimes. Now I keep one in my bag and one in my suitcase. It's the one travel rule I never break anymore.
