Question about travel insurance: I was wrong about the cheap plans

I spent 6 months in Thailand last year and figured travel insurance was a scam, so I went with the absolute cheapest policy for $40. Then I got dengue fever in Chiang Mai and the hospital bill ran me $1,200 out of pocket because my plan had a dumb deductible. A buddy with a mid-tier plan got his whole stay covered and even a medevac consult for free. Am I the only one who thought skimping on this was fine until reality hit, or do some of you still ride barebones?

Funny how that works, we all cheap out on the stuff that only matters when something goes wrong, like brakes on a car or a good mattress.
