Spent $30 on a portable wifi hotspot and it saved my butt in Medellin

I was in Medellin last month and the wifi at my Airbnb kept cutting out every 20 minutes. I mean, I was trying to get some client work done and it was making me crazy. So I dropped like $30 on a little Huawei hotspot at a local shop and loaded it with a prepaid data sim. Honestly it was a lifesaver for those days I needed to work from a park or a cafe with spotty connection. The battery lasts like 6 hours too which is way better than tethering off my phone. Has anyone else had luck with those things in South America or is it just me?
