Talked to a guy in a Chiang Mai cafe who called coworking spaces 'glorified libraries'

He said he makes more money sitting on a park bench with a hotspot than I do paying $200 a month for a desk, and honestly it made me question if I'm just paying for the illusion of productivity.

Read a study a while back that said most people in coworking spaces are there for the social proof, not the actual space. Your guy on the bench might be onto something if he's just grinding out emails and client calls. There's a difference between needing a quiet place to work and paying extra for a community that might just be a bunch of strangers ignoring each other. In my experience, the real value of those places is the random conversations at the coffee machine, not the wifi speed. Mileage varies a lot depending on what kind of work you actually do though.

That bit about "random conversations at the coffee machine" stuck with me. I actually heard a podcast where a guy who runs a few coworking spots said most people never talk to anyone. They just stare at their laptops all day. Kind of defeats the whole purpose if you ask me. Paying a premium for a library with better coffee isn't really a community. I've heard the same thing from friends who tried them. They all said the same thing, it's mostly just quiet and awkward.
