A neighbor in Phoenix said my deck stain job looked 'patchy' from across the street

He was right, I was using a brush and roller on a hot day and it was drying too fast. I switched to a sprayer with a back-brush technique and the finish is way more even now. Anyone have a good tip for keeping the overspray off my siding when I do the railings next week?

Phoenix heat will do that every time. Good call on the sprayer. For the siding, just tape up some plastic sheeting or a big piece of cardboard as a shield.

Disagree about the cardboard shield. That flimsy stuff blows around in the wind and paint still gets through the gaps. Plastic sheeting is the only thing that actually works, but you gotta tape every single edge down tight. I learned the hard way last summer when overspray ruined a section of my neighbor's siding.

That "tape every single edge down" part is the real key that most people skip, just a tiny gap is enough to ruin hours of work. I'd also add to overlap the plastic sheets by at least a foot so the wind can't sneak in between them.
