Bought a $500 dehumidifier to save my basement, now I'm not sure it was the fix
Last spring I noticed that musty smell in the finished part of the basement, so I got a 50-pint dehumidifier from the big box store for $500. It ran constantly for three months and my electric bill went up about $40 a month. The smell got better, but then I checked the exterior grading and found the downspout was dumping water right against the foundation. I spent an afternoon extending it with a $12 plastic pipe and suddenly the dehumidifier only runs half as much. I guess the machine was treating a symptom, not the cause, and I wish I had looked at the water flow first. Anyone else dropped serious cash on a fix before spotting the obvious outside issue?
