Caught a plumber mentioning a cheap trick for slab leaks

I overheard a guy at Home Depot say he finds slab leaks with a thermal camera rental for $60 a day instead of calling a leak detection service. Tried it on my own floor last Saturday, found the hot spot in about 20 minutes near the kitchen corner. Anyone else rent tools before paying for a pro to even look?

Did the thermal camera actually show you the leak itself, or just the wet spot spreading under the slab? Because I always figured the hot water line would light up the whole pipe path, not just the break, which could trick you into digging in the wrong spot.
