Cheap paint roller versus the mid range one, what a difference

I repainted my hallway in Des Moines this past weekend and finally figured out why my old coats always looked streaky. I grabbed a 12 dollar roller from the hardware chain and a 28 dollar one from the paint store, same nap, same paint, same wall. The cheap one shed fibers into the finish and left lines I had to sand down, the pricier one laid the paint down smooth with zero fuss. I used to think rollers were all the same and it was just technique, but that cheap one made me work twice as hard for a worse result. Now I'm wondering if the fancy microfiber covers are worth it too, or is the frame the real key here? Has anyone else noticed this big a gap between roller brands, or did I just get a bad batch?
