Found a leak in my basement that cost me $0 to fix

I had water showing up in my basement after every rain for 3 months. Checked gutters, grading, even had a guy quote me $2k for French drains. Turned out the downspout extension was just sitting 2 inches too close to the foundation wall. Pushed it out 4 feet with a $5 part from Home Depot and haven't seen a drop since. Has anyone else fixed a big problem with something this simple?

That happens all the time with so many things around the house. We get convinced a problem needs a big expensive fix, but the real answer is often something tiny we overlooked. It reminds me of how people replace an entire phone because the battery is weak, when a new battery would have done the trick. Or how we think a car needs a major tune up for a rough idle when it's just a loose gas cap or a dirty air filter. There's this whole pattern of rushing to the complicated solution before checking the simple one first. It takes real patience to slow down and look at the easy stuff before calling in the experts.

@the_fiona that part about the loose gas cap got me. I had a check engine light on for like two months, took it to two different shops, they wanted to charge me hundreds for diagnostics. Turned out my gas cap was just cracked. Twelve bucks at the auto parts store and the light went away in three days. Makes you wonder how many times we pay for the fancy solution when the obvious one is right there.
