Pro tip: Stop layering fresh caulk over old moldy caulk in the shower

I swear every other house I look at has this problem. People just slap new silicone over black crusty stuff. It never seals right. Water gets behind it and rots the drywall. Had a job in Arlington last month where the whole corner of the tub was soft. Had to tear out three tiles. Cost the homeowner $400 extra because they tried to cheap out. Just cut it all out with a razor and clean the gap with bleach first. Takes 20 minutes max. Why is that so hard for people?

My brother did this in his guest bath four years ago and it still looks fine with no signs of mold or water damage. He just wipes the caulk down with a bleach spray every few weeks and keeps the fan running. Maybe the real issue is poor ventilation or people not cleaning regularly, not the caulk itself. Is it really worth ripping out three tiles over a little black speckling?

Funny how people will spend thousands on a house but refuse to spend 20 minutes on a prep job. It's like how nobody reads the instructions on a fire extinguisher until their kitchen is already smoking.
