Shoutout to my grandpa's old paint mixing trick from the 70s

I tried mixing a bit of dish soap into some latex paint last weekend, like my grandpa always did. Figured I'd end up with a bubbly mess on my living room walls in Austin. Instead, the paint went on way smoother with fewer brush strokes showing. Anyone else got an old family tip that actually worked better than the modern stuff?

Grandma always added a splash of vanilla to her pancake batter, never understood why but they were always perfect.
