The day I realized my house was breathing
Last Tuesday, after a solid week of rain in Spokane, I went to paint a bedroom and the old trim just would NOT take the primer, it kept beading up. My neighbor, a retired contractor, came over for a coffee and pointed at my basement dehumidifier, which had been off for months. He said 'Your house is full of damp air, kid, it's sweating through the walls.' I cranked that thing on for 48 hours and the difference was night and day. How often do you all check your indoor humidity levels, especially in older homes?

Honestly, I'm just glad your house is only sweating and not, like, full-on sobbing into a tissue. My last place would get so damp it felt like living inside a used gym sock (which is a vibe, but not a good one). I had to run a dehumidifier basically from April to October just to keep the walls from growing their own little ecosystems. It's wild how much moisture an old building can just hold onto, like a sponge with a mortgage.
